You know what taxidermy is, right ?

A hunter kills an animal, then gets it stuffed to show off his “trophy.”

Well, we’re going to turn that up a notch. Except forget the trophy aspect and throw in an artist’s touch.

Call it a mash up, if you will. It’s called Rogue Taxidermy

The Hour’s Nick McCabe Lokos and Darby Wheeler went to New York City to talk to two guys

Takeshi Yamada is …
Takeshi Yamada is one of the most amazing artists in New York, making fictional creatures and criptids (mermaids, Chupacabra, dragons, etc.) by using body parts of dead animals. They are dried taxidermy. I love his SEA RABBIT. Nate Hill assembles body parts of dead animals for picking in jars to produce freaky artworks, so they are wet taxidermy or pickled taxidermy. God created humans from the dirt. These New York rogue taxidermy artists create artworks also from dirt or discarded creatures.

i really think this is cool, no offence to the people who dont agree but as the person said “If you dont enjoy the dead animals you are missing the true nature of life” those dragons are awesome!! i love dragons =] ignorant of me hehe

I applaud them. …
I applaud them. They are being creative and respectful. Roadkill usually ends up at the dump, in a reeking pile garbage. These guys are showing respect to the animals by useing them to create something new. It’s no different than your typical shoulder mount- only with a more creative twist :) Side note; I would say that they probably preserve the animal parts with a liquid preservative, and I’m sure they use every precaution when collecting. Gotta watch out for rabies in those road kills!

Last March, I had …
Last March, I had fun at the free Chinatown Taxidermy Tour created by Nate Hill and Takeshi Yamada in NYC. TV news crews were there, too. I brought home frog heads. Short of actually sucking blood, this may be the closest thing NYC has to real vampires. Yamada recently had an exhibition and lecture at the American Museum of Natural History. This may be the revival of the art of freak taxidermy (rogue taxidermy) and sideshows in NYC.

I love your Sea Rabbit!

no i think takeing …
no i think takeing different parts of animals and makeing a new one is dumb disrespetful. ok well im done talking about this because this honestly makes no difference to me.

daisyfuck on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

Do you not think …
Do you not think killing something is a major form of disrespect? Like if someone killed any pet you may have, you wouldn’t find that disrespectful? Or shitty?

krudcokid on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

whats wrond with …
whats wrond with killing them i dont get it. i guess there right youll never convince an animal rights activist

daisyfuck on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

Uhh, how about …
Uhh, how about everything else? That’s great for the deer that you get to kill them and be looked at as a “hero to the animals”, but that still doesn’t dismiss the fact that you kill them and this guy doesn’t.

krudcokid on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

ha ha art w/e how …
ha ha art w/e how about the deer which i gave credit to being over populated b/c they were protected on that land?

daisyfuck on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

The whole reason …
The whole reason everything is unbalanced is because you people think nature needs human intervention for everything. There aren’t enough rabbits so you start killing off all the foxes, then there are hardly any foxes and rabbits are overpopulating, then it’s okay to kill off the rabbits because the foxes weren’t there to do it for you.

This is art. He didn’t kill this animal. You probably did, so why do you care what happens to it afterward?

krudcokid on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

i dont kill an …
i dont kill an animal if i not going to use every part i can with it. whether i give a bone to my dog use the fur for fishing lure company or anything i can. killing animals is necessary. every dead animal on the road help every other animal, coyotes, foxes, birds of prey, insect that keep the forest balanced. i do taxidermy but the proper way, but whatever, if they like doing this, who am i to say what ethics is?

krudcokid on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

yes hunt for sport …
yes hunt for sport we do, but also help control population of animals everything we buy that deals with hunting or fishing has a tax on it. a tax where the money goes to perserving spots to help maintain population of sporting animals and endangered animals. There is a place close to where i live where the didnt let people hunt deer, and after a few years all the deer were malnourished and sick so now they alow hunting.and with a dead animal let other animals eat it its food for them.

daisyfuck on April 26th, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

In today’s world, …
In today’s world, hunting is not necessary for survival. Meaning, the reason you choose to hunt is for sport. These artists don’t kill their animals. You do. You kill the animals when it’s entirely unnecessary. What are you supposed to do with a dead animal? If not eat it, then throw it away? Many rogue taxidermists find their animals as road kill or receive them from donations from pest-control companies.

Would you suggest we give them a proper burial? I’m pretty sure you don’t do that.
